Stump grinding is the last step after a tree comes down, or the fix for a stump that has been sitting in your yard for years. We grind the stump down below grade so you can mow over it, replant the spot, or just get rid of the eyesore. The grindings get backfilled into the hole, and the area is left level.
A stump left in the ground is more than a trip hazard. It keeps sending up suckers from some species, it attracts termites and fungus as it rots, and it sits there taking up space you could be using. Grinding it out is cleaner and faster than trying to dig it out by hand, which tears up half your yard in the process.
We grind to below grade, usually six to twelve inches under the soil, so the root ball breaks down and the spot settles flat. For stumps in a lawn, that is enough to mow over. For stumps where you want to build or pour a slab, we can grind deeper. We backfill the hole with the grindings or with topsoil, depending on what you want to do with the spot.
The width of the stump and how deep you want it ground are what drive the price. A narrow stump in a lawn is a quick job. A wide stump, or a cluster of stumps from a hedge removal, takes longer. We can also chase the big surface roots if they are lifting your sidewalk or lawn, grinding them down so they stop being a trip hazard.
Stump grinding is clean work compared to a removal. The machine makes mulch out of the stump, and we rake and backfill when we are done. There is no big pile of wood to haul, just the grindings, which we leave for you to use as mulch or haul off if you prefer.
